Stone that
outlasts every
empire.
Carved by Makrana was founded by Waris Rander — a fourth-generation stone carver born in Makrana, Rajasthan. Our craft is rooted in the same quarries that produced the marble for the Taj Mahal. Four generations of knowledge. One obsession: making things that last.
The Founder
Waris Rander
4th Generation Master Stone Carver · Makrana, Rajasthan“Stone does not lie. Every mark you make on it is permanent. That truth has shaped how I work — and what I refuse to compromise.”
Waris Rander was born and raised in Makrana, Rajasthan — the village whose quarries have supplied the world's finest white marble since the 16th century. His great-grandfather first picked up a chisel here, learning the art of stone carving from a master craftsman in the same dust-covered workshops that still stand today. That was four generations ago.
The craft passed from great-grandfather to grandfather, from grandfather to father — each generation deepening the mastery, adding new techniques, refining the eye. By the time Waris grew up in Makrana, the workshop was already rich with inherited knowledge: relief carving, Pietra Dura inlay, Jali lattice work, and architectural stone forming.
Trained in this unbroken lineage since childhood, Waris founded Carved by Makrana to carry the tradition forward — without shortcuts, without imports, and without compromising the standard four generations of his family built stone by stone.
Our Story
Born from the
earth of Makrana
The village of Makrana in Rajasthan has supplied the world's finest white marble for over five centuries. When Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal in 1632, it was Makrana marble — dense, luminous, and 98% pure calcite — that his architects chose above all others.
Waris Rander's grandfather first learned to carve stone in this village, under a master carver who had inherited the same traditions from his father before him. That knowledge — tactile, specific, impossible to fake — is the foundation of every piece we make at Carved by Makrana today.
When Waris founded Carved by Makrana, the commitment was absolute: no imports, no factories, no outsourcing of craft. Every block is quarried from Makrana. Every commission is carved by artisans who have spent their lives learning to listen to stone. Every piece is shipped from our workshop, packed by the same hands that made it.
The result is not just a product — it is a continuation of a tradition that predates the Mughal Empire. And we intend to keep it that way.

Five centuries of stone
The great-grandfather's apprenticeship
Waris's great-grandfather takes up the chisel in Makrana — learning relief carving from a master craftsman in the same quarrying village that supplied marble for the Taj Mahal. The family lineage begins.
The second generation
The craft is passed to Waris's grandfather. He expands the family's mastery to include Jali lattice screens and more refined architectural stone work.
The third generation
Waris's father carries the tradition forward, adding Pietra Dura inlay to the repertoire. Commissions begin reaching clients outside Rajasthan.
Waris learns the stone
Growing up in Makrana, Waris Rander spends his formative years inside the workshop — watching, asking, and slowly carving.
Carved by Makrana
Waris founds Carved by Makrana to bring this four-generation heritage to the world — no factories, no imports, no compromises.
What we stand for
Our four principles
These are not aspirations — they are the non-negotiable conditions under which Waris Rander and every artisan at Carved by Makrana works.
See our productsAuthenticity above all
Every block of stone is quarried directly from Makrana. We never use substitute material, composites, or imported marble. What you receive is the same stone used to build the Taj Mahal.
Craft takes time
Our artisans have mastered Jali carving, Pietra Dura inlay, and deep relief over decades. These skills cannot be learned from a manual. They are inherited through repetition, and that is why they are irreplaceable.
Built to outlast you
We do not design for trends. Every commission is built to outlast its owner — patinated gently by time, never diminished by it. The brief is always: make something that matters in 200 years.
Fair craft, clean supply
Fair wages, responsible quarrying, and direct relationships with the stone workers who make these pieces possible. Beauty should never come at the cost of the people who create it.
Common questions
Everything you want to know
From Waris Rander's background to how we ship marble across the world — answered plainly.
Who is Waris Rander?
Waris Rander is the founder and lead artisan of Carved by Makrana — a third-generation marble carver born and raised in Makrana, Rajasthan. He has trained in Pietra Dura inlay, Jali carving, and architectural stone work since childhood, learning directly from his father and grandfather.
Why is Makrana marble so special?
Makrana marble contains up to 98% calcite — making it one of the purest white marbles on earth. Its density and non-porous structure resist weathering far better than other marbles. It is the reason the Taj Mahal still gleams white after nearly 400 years. Most other marbles yellow and crack; Makrana does not.
Where are your products made?
